The Pawnee Rock area is renowned for outstanding hunting and abounds with deer, wild turkeys, quail, pheasants, waterfowl and other wildlife. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has enrolled 4,436 acres of land in Barton County in the Walk-In Hunting program for 2008. In the Barton, Russell, Ellis, Rush, Pawnee, Stafford, Rice, Ellsworth Counties, there are 88,360 acres enrolled in the program in 2008. These lands are open to the public for hunting purposes.
